The Queensland Medical Women’s Society held their Annual Christmas Fund Raiser in December and Angelo’s was thrilled to donate a few Pasta Hampers for prizes on the night. We are extremely proud to be able to support the QMWS.
The QMWS is a not-for-profit organisation with a membership base comprising mainly of female doctors ranging from private specialists to general practitioners. The QMWS is the peak representative body for women in medicine with goals to further the professional development of medical women through promoting education, research and professional opportunities. Furthermore, the QMWS promotes health and welfare of all Australians, particularly women and children. The QMWS was started in 1929 and Lady Cilento was one of our past presidents. Dr Phyllis Cilento was a strong advocate for both womens and childrens health throughout her career. Known as “mother MD” or “medical mother” she wrote public articles on nutrition, the health of mothers and children, and all aspects of childcare. Considered ahead of her time she actively fought for natural childbirth, family planning, and permitting fathers to be present at the birth of their children, all things that today are widely accepted as normal practice. QMWS continues to be an advocate for the health and wellbeing of women and children. We regularly hold fundraising events for charities that reflect our own values.
